Returning home and discovering you’ve been robbed is a devastating experience. Even though you may have lost some of your valuables, there is a chance that you can recover them. It is important to think ahead and be prepared if you ever do face this misfortune.
Install A Home Security System
To fully protect your home from any further intrusions, install a home security system with security cameras. Video footage is often the evidence that finds a burglar and helps reclaim your stolen property.
Inventory All Of Your Valuables
Keep a detailed record of all your valuable possessions. Maintain a file of serial numbers, model numbers, and any other identifying information for all your electronics and merchandise. Have photos of your valuables as well to prove your ownership. Some insurance plans will replace or reimburse you for your lost items if you can prove you owned them.
File A Police Report
Contact the police as soon as you are aware a robbery has taken place. Take photos of the scene without disturbing anything that the thief touched. Share copies of your inventory of valuables with the police and get a full copy of the police report yourself.
Even though the police will do their best to recover your stolen property, it doesn’t hurt to take matters into your own hands. Check local news reports to see if similar robberies have taken place in your area. Also, check online selling sites to see if your property is being sold there. If you do find any of your stolen property on eBay or Craigslist, immediately contact the police and do not contact the seller on your own.
Create A Digital Fingerprint
A website called Stolen 911 will take an inventory of your stolen property and search all search engines online to see if it is listed for sale on any website, even outside of your local area.
Visit Local Pawn Shops
Visit any local pawn shops in your area as they may have your stolen merchandise. Check any stores that may specialize in buying and selling specific valuables. For example, if comic books are missing, check the lock comic book shops. If you do discover any of your property within a store for resale, make sure to contact the police for assistance rather than taking the matter into your own hands.
In some instances, it is very difficult to recover stolen property. The best evidence you can provide is security footage from your home security system and a record of what was stolen so police can track your missing valuables.
