Technology seems to run on fast-forward: it was just 100 years ago that Henry Ford masterminded the first assembly lines to mass-produce the modern automobile. Fifty years ago, we didn’t have personal computers, color TV was in its infancy, and there was no World Wide Web. And it’s only in the 21st century that we’ve seen the evolution of the iPod, smartphones, and TiVo/DVR.
Another recent technology: smart homes and smart security. Over the last 10-15 years, the smart home has evolved at breakneck speed, leaping out of its baby stages and into the new frontier of technology that not only understands external stimuli, but also knows how to react.
It’s impossible to say where the next 100 years will take us, but one thing is for sure: the smart home of 2115 would blow our minds. Just for giggles, here are a few of our favorite (and wild) predictions for smart home security 100 years in the future:
1. Your Home Will Know You
Your home already knows you, or at least it knows your smartphone. But the smart home of 2115 will take this to a whole other level of intimacy, perhaps via a wearable or even an implanted chip (dun dun DUN!). Without a doubt, these homes will interact with your every move, adjusting lighting and temperature and other factors to respond to your heartbeat, your body temperature, and even your mood.
2. Your Home Will Be Self Sufficient
Sustainable energies are on the rise, and in 100 years your home will be entirely self sufficient: solar roofs, windows and walls will power every last function of your home – no matter how toasty you like your winter temps or how cool you like to stay in summer. And your home will know exactly how much power it needs to produce.
3. Your Appliances Will Be Smart. Super Smart.
Forget that little robot vacuum that gets lost in the corner: tomorrow’s smart appliances will intelligently identify your home’s needs and will fulfill tasks efficiently. Your oven will be able to roast the perfect turkey; your fridge will warn you when food’s about to spoil; your vacuum will know which areas of the house are dirty – and won’t leave behind even a speck of dirt. And all these systems will be interconnected and accessible via one central hub, maybe even an implant in your brain!
4. We’ll Probably Have Robots
Believe it or not, today’s inventors have already developed some pretty awesome robots. The future can hold just about anything, but some experts predict that robots will essentially serve as the hub of a smart home – your house’s eyes and ears, finding dirty corners, cleaning your dishes, and activating the alarm at a possible intruder. Only time will tell what capabilities robots will really have in 100 years; let’s just say they’re more Rosie of Jetsons fame than Rise of the Machines.
5. You’ll Be Able to Control Your Home with Mere Thought
Mind-blowing (pun intended) but possible: some experts predict that the smart home of the future will interface with your brain and follow thought commands.
